Jamshedpur, February 7, 2024: Tata Steel is collaborating with SER division to develop sustainable rail infrastructure by utilizing its slag-based aggregates. In a one-of-a-kind initiative, Tata Aggreto & Tata Nirman will be used extensively in construction of blanketing layer in railway track. Tata Steel and SER will jointly work to enhance usage of slag-based manufactured aggregates which will replace natural aggregates.

A delegation from SER division led by Shri Anil Kumar Mishra, General Manager, SER, met Tata Steel senior executives and deliberated on the project execution today. GM, SER emphasised that utilisation of the sustainable alternatives is the need of the hour, and it will also help in conserving the ecology. Speaking on the occasion, Shri Rajeev Shrivastava, Chief Administrative Officer (Construction) apprised about the ambitious plan chalked out to strengthen the rail infrastructure by the Ministry of Railways. He also applauded the role of Tata Steel in development of the sustainable building materials to cater to the needs of the construction industry. 

In the endeavor to transform Steel Slag into sustainable aggregates, Tata Steel has set-up a state-of-the art accelerated weathering facility for processing of LD slag through steam ageing. A dedicated lab has been set-up to ensure Quality Assurance the product. Tata Steel had launched India’s first branded LD slag products – Tata Aggreto and Tata Nirman. These initiatives of Tata Steel were well appreciated by the visiting team. The use of slag based manufactured aggregates helps in the preservation of biodiversity by reducing the need for mining of natural aggregates and eliminates the requirement of transportation of aggregates across large distances.

We have been successful in doing it constantly by adopting newer technologies and developing new products & applications. With “Zero Waste” goal, Tata Steel has created a dedicated profit centre for by-products management- Industrial By-Products Management Division (IBMD) to ensure efficient by-products management by adopting advanced practices of steel waste processing.

About Tata Aggreto

Tata Aggreto is India’s first steel slag-based branded product, extensively used in the construction of national highways, which has helped in conserving natural aggregates and minimizing the environmental footprint.

Tata Aggreto is produced out of 0-65 mm processed LD slag with four different size ranges for convenience in design mix. Owing to its size and texture, it is suitable for use in bituminous and concrete road construction.
