Bhubaneswar, Aug 8: The 13th edition of the Model United Nations (MUN) at KIIT International School (KiiTIS) was inaugurated on Saturday, bringing together young minds from across the country for deliberations on global issues. The event was formally declared open by former diplomat Sujan Chinoy, Director General of the Manohar Parrikar Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses (MP-IDSA), New Delhi.
The two-day conference aims to foster critical thinking, diplomacy and leadership skills among students, providing them with a platform to understand international relations and collaborate on solutions to global challenges.
Addressing the students, Chinoy shared his long association with KIIT and its Founder, recalling a visit two decades ago when Prof. Achyuta Samanta had brought a team of young rugby players from his institutions to Australia. He highlighted how, despite rugby not being a traditional Indian strength, the students performed exceptionally well, underscoring the power of vision, discipline and encouragement.
He emphasised that values such as simplicity, hard work and teamwork are fundamental to success. “There is no substitute for industriousness. Even a lion must rise and hunt; success does not come on its own,” he said, urging students to imbibe these qualities in their lives. Chinoy also stressed that collective effort and shared vision are essential, noting that achievements of great institutions are always the result of strong teamwork.
Founder of KIIT and KISS, Prof. Achyuta Samanta, expressed his happiness over the successful organisation of the 13th MUN and thanked the chief guest for gracing the occasion. Recalling their first meeting in Australia, he described Chinoy’s distinguished diplomatic career spanning over four decades and his expertise in international relations, defence and policy-making.
Highlighting the achievements of KIIT and KISS, Prof. Samanta noted that the institutions have made significant strides in sports and education. He said KIIT has produced more than 24 Olympians and contributed substantially to India’s medal tally in international events such as the World University Games and Asian Athletics Championships. He also pointed out that KIIT students recently secured multiple medals at the Commonwealth Games and have consistently performed well in national competitions like the Khelo India University Games.
Principal of KIIT International School, Sanjay Suar, informed that around 1,500 students from nearly 100 schools across major cities such as Delhi, Chennai and Kolkata are participating in this year’s MUN. He added that 13 committees have been constituted where delegates will engage in discussions and debates on pressing global issues.
